The Observer this weekend ran with a cover story regarding the dangers of middle-class children’s diets . Millions of children are thought to be building up huge dietary and health problems due to hidden salt and sugar content in apparently ‘healthy’ foods .
Professor Graham MacGregor of St. George’s Hospital, London, was reported as commenting: “Salt is a silent killer. When you eat more salt, you retain more fluid.” The focus of the article deals with very common foods eaten by a vast spectrum of children, foods that include breakfast cereals, toast, cereal bars, processed meats and bangers and mash.
One way in which the government is trying to address the obesity crisis is the Change4Life campaign. Public health minister Dawn Primarolo was reported at the launch as saying: “We want families to engage with the campaign and understand that obesity is not someone else’s problem.”
