Grow Your Own Espalier Apple Trees
There is a way of growing apples in a small space where you only need a sunny wall or fence. Espalier trees are ideal for a modest garden, as their branches train horizontally on each side of their stems to form a productive, compact tree. You can also buy ready trained trees which are available in many different varieties. These trees are perfect when growing space is limited.
How To Grow Your Own Espalier Apple Trees?
- Make a support by fitting horizontal wires to a sunny fence or wall that matches the distance between the arms of the tree - usually 35-45cm (13-17in) apart. Drill holes and fix wires using eyebolts.
- Soak the plant thoroughly before planting and allow to drain.
- Dig a planting hole 15cm (6in) from the fence or wall, forking the bottom to loosen the soil. Make the hole wide enough for the roots to be spread out and deep enough so the soil mark on the stem sits at the same level as the soil.
- Check soil levels by placing a cane across the gap after you've placed the tree in the hole.
- Back fill with soil and firm gently with your heel, water and mulch with well-rotted manure. Tie branches to support wires.
