Dark chocolate in diet cuts heart risk

Thu, 28 Aug 2008

According to a recent study, people that eat small amounts of dark chocolate as part of their diet face a lower risk of stroke and heart disease . Dark chocolate, rich in flavonols, could have major health benefits.

The research, led by experts in America and Italy, assessed 19 patients with high blood pressure . The patients were given white and dark chocolate . White chocolate does not contain flavanols.

A cardiologist at Sheffield University, Tim Chico, reportedly commented: "If I had a high blood pressure I'd chose a dark chocolate bar rather than milk." Like white chocolate, milk chocolate doesn’t contain flavanols.
