Vege diet ideal for diabetics

Fri, 11 Jan 2008

According to a recent study conducted and published by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, in conjunction with the George Washington University and University of Toronto, type 2 diabetics would be best off eating an unrefined vegan diet .

The lead researcher, Neal Barnard, is now in India talking about his research. He reportedly commented: "The diet appears remarkably effective and all the side effects are good ones - especially weight loss and lower cholesterol levels. This study we hope will rekindle interest in using diet changes first, rather than prescription drugs ."

Barnard reportedly continued: "The number of people with Type 2 diabetes in India has more than doubled since 1995 largely because of changing eating habits. A low-fat vegan diet could reverse this trend."

And reportedly concluded: "I see India as a key player in combating the global diabetes epidemic. A traditional northern Indian diet which is vegetarian, has minimal use of cooking oils and has a variety of food stuff is the best for human use."
