According to a recent report, eating a vegan diet free from gluten could protect rheumatoid arthritis patients from suffering a heart attack or stroke .
Patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis have a high risk of dying from heart attack or stroke, due to the inflammation caused by the disease. However, the new research shows that those who ate a vegan diet had better cholesterol and less inflammation of the arteries.
Vegan diets are extremely healthy, but many dieters find them hard to follow. Vegan diets exclude animal products, and gluten. A research team at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm studied just under 40 volunteers, and found those with vegan diets showed a decrease in bad cholesterol .
Over a longer period, those on a vegan diet were found to have a lower body mass index and other signs of a greater resistance to blocked arteries and cardiovascular disease .
