To try and improve modern diet and wellbeing, the dietary habits of the ancient Maori are under investigation. In the modern era, poor diet and low exercise levels cause high obesity amongst the Maori community.
A New Zealand report called the Social Report 2008 indicates that the situation is not improving, partly as a result of eating a high fat diet . The Maori diet has changed significantly in the last 200 years. High fat foods have replaced traditional diets .
Researchers found that health awareness in the Maori community is low, and eating well is thought to require too much effort and planning. Kiwi experts say that small-scale, community based initiatives are essential to make all the difference.
