Britain's record on lifestyle cancers is just as bad as America's. Approximately a third of the cases of the most common cancers might be avoided with exercise and a healthier diet, so the World Cancer Research Fund has stated.
About 80,000 cases of cancer might be prevented in Britain, states Prof Martin Wiseman, Scientific and Medical Adviser for World Cancer Research Fund.
In the States, around seven types of cancer are weight related, with under 20 per cent being preventable by people maintaining a healthy weight . In the UK, that figure is approximately 17 per cent.
A major reason for the overall UK situation being so bad is the amount of alcohol that we drink.
There needs to be greater awareness that alcohol increases cancer risk.
Approximately 20 per cent of breast cancer cases in the UK are attributable to alcohol, which is twice the American estimate.
Regular exercise, healthy eating and maintaining a healthy weight might prevent 80,000 cancers per annum, he said.
The forms of cancer that are preventable include larynx, pharynx, and oesophagus in the throat, pancreas, stomach, gallbladder, lung, bowel, liver, breast, cancer of the lining of the womb, kidney and prostate.
Nearly 300,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in Britain each year.
