Instead of struggling with a resolution to go on a strict New Year’s diet, you may wish to adopt a lifelong diet .
This diet is centuries old and high in fresh and seasonal foods, nothing from a can. Unlike fashionable fad diets, this type of diet has been eaten by the people of Italy, Spain and several Mediterranean countries for hundreds of years.
The foods consumed are fresh and seasonal; when not in season the foods can be eaten from frozen. The key point here is that the foods consumed are unprocessed and therefore lower in salt and sugar as well as bad fats than the processed foods many of us eat in the UK.
Meat is off the menu more or less; if eaten it may be consumed once a month. Fish is encouraged on a daily basis as well beans and legumes. Chicken is occasionally eaten.
The Mediterranean diet can stabilise blood sugar levels, lower cholesterol and a reduce the risk of heart disease as well as other health problems. Other research has highlighted that this diet can lower the risk of developing cancer and Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.
