What is Fairtrade?

Fairtrade aims to change the lot of poor producers in the developing world by enabling them to utilise their skills and resources to trade their way out of poverty.

The British spend over £2 billion per annum on Fairtrade products, which goes to show how popular such products are becoming.

Fairtrade challenges injustices in trading structures and practices which lead to poorer people being exploited and marginalised.

Over a decade ago, Traidcraft established the Fairtrade Mark, which guarantees the following;

  • A just fair price to cover sustainable production costs
  • An extra premium which is invested in community projects
  • Specific health standards for producers as well as their socio-economic welfare
  • Specific environmental protection standards

Traidcraft itself goes a step further by:

  • Opting to work with small-scale and poor producer groups
  • Working in conjunction with its producers, it is committed to long-term relationships and regular contact
  • Investing in producer development to help build sustainable, professional businesses
  • Offering the widest range of Fairtrade products in the UK
  • Leading innovations in Fairtrade
  • Lobbying governments to advance ethical trading and justice in trading
  • Dealing with issues people face who are disadvantaged by unjust trade agreements
  • Demonstrating ethical business practices
  • Challenging other businesses to adapt ethical business practices
