Grow Your Own Potatoes

Should you want a crop of potatoes in the summer, you need to start chitting them in late January or February, six weeks prior to planting them. Chitting refers to encouraging the seed potatoes to sprout prior to planting.

How To Grow Your Own Potatoes?

  • Once the shoots of the seed potatoes 1.5-2.5cm (0.5-1inches long, they are ready for planting.
  • Dig a 3-5 inch trench deep In March or April.
  • Put a bit of fertiliser on the trench. Start planting.
  • Plant potatoes 12inches apart, with 16-20inches between the rows.
  • Carefully handle the chitted tubers, placing them gently in the trench with their shoots pointing upwards. Place some soil on top.
  • When the shoots appear, cover each row with soil in order that the shoots are not visible. This will need to done frequently.
  • You can pick your potatoes from June until September, given the variety and growing condition.
