School children stay on junk food diet

Despite countrywide insistence on schoolchildren eating a healthier diet, it appears that health menus are being shunned in favour of illicit junk food .
School canteens have been forced to make their dishes more healthy, in some part due to pressure from celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. Junk food has been removed from both school menus and vending machines, but it appears that children and students are filling the gap with illegal junk food sales .
Enterprising pupils are apparently running ‘smuggling operations’ selling junk food to other pupils. A Times newspaper reports indicate that kids are resorting to desperate measures to get sugar back into their diets, importing hauls of junk food bought off site for sale to fellow classmates.
Teachers claim that healthy diets in schools would only work if pupils were consulted and allowed to influence menus.
