According to a recent report by nutritionists, knowledge about diet amongst teenagers has declined dramatically over the course of the last 10 years. According to the experts, teenagers are widely ignorant about how to cook and exactly what to eat as part of their diet .
According to Margot Brennan from the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute, the phenomenon has resulted in an increase in cases of obesity and non-insulin-dependent diabetes .
Margot Brennan: “I am seeing every day in the clinic people who have no idea. A vegetable, as far as they are concerned, comes in a jar or a frozen packet. They have no idea how to cook. They have no idea what a balanced diet is. Life is far too busy and I think we are miles away from getting the sort of information needed out there.”
Brennan reportedly continued: “Looking at teenage eating habits, girls are extremely low in iron intake and very low in calcium intake. The affluence of Irish society in recent years has contributed to poor eating habits with more people eating out more and leaning towards “the high fibre, high sugar, fast option.”
