According to an American research team, as many as 75% of diet supplements available for online purchase could contain ingredients that potentially disrupt heart rhythm. The team tested 12 different over-the-counter supplements to draw their conclusions, finding that eight contained ingredients related to heart complications.
The products all included an ingredient list, but none came with a warning about heart side effects such as cardiac arrest and arrhythmia . The danger of diet pills, the researchers said, was being buried.
Dr. Razavi of the Texas Heart Institute was reported as commenting: “There is a false sense of safety that consumers have when they are using these. Many people assume the FDA assures the safety and efficacy of supplements.”
To find the supplements, Razavi and colleagues simply searched the Internet . The team purchased and then examined the pills, which contained dangerous ingredients such as Ma Huang root, Korean Ginseng, bitter orange and liquorice root .
