The internet parental control software company CyberSentinel undertook a recent survey of young girls aged 6 to 15.
A third of 11 year old participants stated that they were ‘too fat’, with a third saying that they disliked their stomach.
Although their bones are still growing, 19% disliked something about their bodies with the chest (19%) and legs (16%) being the key concerns.
14% asserted that they were not happy with their arms, with another 13% disliking the shape of their bottom.
Astonishingly, a quarter of respondents miss a meal in order to stay thin.
The average 11 year old has tried three types of diets : WeightWatchers, the Atkins diet and Slimfast .
A quarter has also investigated weight loss tips on the internet or discussed losing weight with friends met onlline.
In total a third of young girls have researched the internet to discover more about dieting, calorie control and slimming products .
The survey results highlight the potentially dangerous meausures young girls are taking to copy celebrities or ‘fit in’ with peers.
A fifth of 15 year olds are frequently skipping breakfast, with an alarming 18% just eating one meal per day.
