Adhering to the so-called Dash diet may help prevent the development of type 2 diabetes .
The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) is high in fruit, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products, which result in high potassium, calcium, magnesium and fibre consumption. It also provides a moderately high protein consumption, as well as low saturated fat consumption.
DASH can lower blood pressure . However, more research is needed with regard to this diet vis-a-vis diabetes development. Intervention studies have hilghlighted that the Dash diet has additional beneficial effects on low and total density lipoprotein cholesterol, weight management and insulin sensitivity.
The research conducted into the impact of DASH on diabetes management was carried out by researchers from Columbia, studying 862 adults participants in a clinical trial. Approximately 1 in 6 of them developed type 2 diabetes over the five years of study follow-up.
The study’s relatively small sample size could have been a limiting factor and further investigation is needed into the role of the Dash diet on diabetes development and management.
