Despite being heralded as a diet miracle, a Neanderthal diet may actually have killed off the caveman. Neanderthals had an unhealthy diet that was based largely on red meat, and on the whole ignored seafood .
A recent study by a research team in Leipzig found that the restrictive diet may have killed this early form of humans off. The team studied the chemical breakdown of bones and found that Neanderthals largely ate mammoth and bison.
Early humans also had a fondness for red meat, but resorted to supplements such as fish, birds and smaller mammals. This diversity helped to form the building blocks of modern day humans.
