Scientists Discover Reason why Mediterranean Diet is So Healthy

Consuming moderate amounts of olive oil suppresses genes which would otherwise cause inflammation and therefore lead to health conditions, such as, heart disease .
The Mediterranean diet has been associated with good health for some time.
It usually involves eating lots olive oil, fish, fruit and vegetables, as well as tiny amounts of daity products and red meat.
Scientists have discovered that consumption of food cooked or soaked in olive oil represses several genes which would otherwise trigger inflammation in the body.
Study leader, Francisco Perez-Jimenez, from the University of Cordoba, Spain, “Several of the repressed genes are known to be involved in pro-inflammatory processes, suggesting that the diet can switch the activity of immune system cells to a less harmful profile.”
Not only can a Mediterranean diet lower the risk of heart problems, it can also lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, developing Type 2 diabetes and depression .
The findings are published in the journal BMC Genomics.
