The Australian government has made a financial commitment of $110 million over the next two years to deal with the alarming rate at which diabetes is growing amongst Aboriginals.
The funding has been renewed for the Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative (ADI) which delivers culturally-relevant programmes, with the aim of lowering the incidence of diabetes, including raising awareness of healthy eating and wellbeing .
It is vital that a majority of Aboriginals need to make healthier choices.
The original Aboriginal diet is a low sugar and high fibre diet . The high-sugar, low-fibre Western diet has been adapted widely by Aboriginals and is slowly killing them.
A healthy lifestyle consists of healthy eating and regular exercise .
Diabetes was almost non-existent amongst Aboriginals 50 years ago. However, it is presently thrice the national average.
