UCLA researchers have discovered that fructose can speeden the growth of cancerous cells.
Their study found that pancreatic cancer cells multiplied more quickly when given fructose .
This has led scientists to conclude that fructose can also cause other cancers to grow more quickly too.
Fructose is found naturally in fruits and vegetables .
However, scientists are concerned about the increased intake of refined sweeteners, like high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). They emphasised that the western diet has a great deal of refined sugar in it, including fructose and that it is related to many modern diseases, such as diabetes, obesity and fatty liver.
The consumption of high-fructose corn syup has increased by a phenomenal 1,000 percent from 1970 to 1990. It is found in many processed foods and soft drinks.
HFCS is dangerous to our health as our body does not react in the same way to natural sugars as it does to HFCS.
In addition, there is nothing natural about HFCS. It has mercury in it due to the extremely unnatural way it is made. Therefore, people are awakening to the fact that HFCS is to be avoided. The demand for HFCS has declined by 11 per cent in the last decade.
