FDA Disallows Diet Pill

The new Qnexa pill was intended to assist with weight loss for obese individuals.
However, the FDA has disallowed the diet pill due to its side effects.
On July 15 , a FDA committee reviewed Qnexa and rejected approval of the diet pill by a vote of 10-6.
They discovered that the pill does assist individuals lose weight, with the majority reporting 10 percent plus weight loss .
Nonetheless, the benefits of weight loss are outweighed by concerns about the drug’s safety.
These safety concerns include suicidal thoughts, heart palpitations, memory lapses and birth defects.
These concerns could be life threatening and outweigh the benefit of moderate weight loss.
The target date for completion of the review of Qnexa is October 28, 2010.
Moreover, Qnexa is in phase 2 clinical development for treating type 2 diabetes and obstructive sleep apnea .
