Big Changes Recommended for the American Diet

An advsiory committee has recommended sweeping changes to the American diet, that is, lowering total calorie consumption, greatly cutting down the intake of salt and added sugars and transforming diets to include more plant-based foods and sea food.
This report, prepared by the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, is going to become the foundation for current federal guidelines on diet, nutrition and health .
These recommendations could also influence existing food assistance programmes like school lunches, food stamps and industry regulation.
These recommendations come at a time when nearly two thirds of Amercian adults and a third of American children are deemed to be overweight or obese, resulting in various chronic diseases and health problems.
Should the committee’s recommendations be adhered to, they could significantly affect the waistlines and health of Americans.
