New research conducted at the Ben-Gurion Univeristy of the Negev, Israel, suggests that low fat diets and and low carb diets can keep strokes and heart attacks at bay.
The Israeli researchers stated that carb-free, fat-free food as well as Mediterranean food can reverse artery blockages, thereby lowering the likelihood of developing Arteriosclerotic Vascular Disease.
The study was conducted with 140 participants.
The experts affirm that the results are sound and convey a strong message to the general public regarding the benefits of adhering to a healthy diet in order to stay healthy and fit.
The study involved dividing the paticipants into three groups, each adhering to a a low carbohydrate diet, a low fat diet or a Mediterranean diet .
Overall, participants were overweight individuals aged between 40 and 65. They maintained the dietary regime for two years.
The study illustrated that after keeping to the assigned diet for two years, the participants ‘ arterial walls reduced by 5%.
Iris Shai, the study leader stated, “It was very interesting to see that these very different diets had a similar effect. Some people suggest that low-carbohydrate diets are more likely to clog arteries, but we did not see that.”
