Eating whole grains as opposed to refined grains can benefit your waistline, according to new research.
In a recent study, adults who ate three or more servings of whole grains on a daily basis and limited refined grain intake to less than a daily serving had ten per cent less belly fat than those who did not stick to this diet .
A slice of 100 percent whole wheat bread or half a cup of oatmeal makes for one serving of whole grains, with a slice of white bread or half a cup of white rice representing a serving of refined grains.
The findings remained true after the researchers accounted for other facts which could have influenced the results, like participants’ alcohol intake, smoking, intake of fruit and vegetables, as well as percentage of calories from exercise and fat .
The study was of 2,834 men and women, aged from 32 to 83. who filled in questionnaires regarding their diets .
