New research claims that insufficient omega 3 fatty acid in our diets could explain adverse effects on emotional behaviour.
The fatty acids are “essential” lipids as the body cannot generate them anew. Hence, they need to be provided via food and the balance they create is crucial for the maintenance of optimal brain functioning.
The researchers studied mice who were placed on a diet low in omega-3 fatty acid.
They uncovered that inadequate omega-3 intake disturbed neuronal communication. This kind of neuronal dysfunctionality was accompanied by depressive behaviours.
Therefore, the researchers concluded that there is an association between an imbalance in omega 3 fatty acids and omega 6 fatty acids and mood disorders.
