German researchers have warned that the calcium pills, taken throughout the UK by millions of menopausal women and older people to strengthen bones, ought to be “taken with caution” upon scientists finding out that regular users are 86 per cent more susceptible to heart attacks than those who adhere to a natural calcium diet .
The survey was of 23,980 German men and women aged between 35 and 64 who participated in a study called the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition.
Over 11 years, a total of 354 heart attacks, 260 strokes and 267 related associated deaths were recorded.
A Department of Health spokeswoman stated that a healthy balanced diet provides all the nutrients you need, including calcium .
Good calcium sources include milk and dairy foods, fortified dairy food alternatives and green leafy vegetables .
