The first minister of Scotland, Alex Salmond, has revealed that he is currently on the 5:2 diet.
Mr Salmond said that he actually decided to give it a go after being advised to do so by the former governor of the Bank of England, Sir Mervyn King.
As part of the regime, he will have to stick to a strict rules of only consuming 600 calories per day for two days of the week. A regular men’s intake of 2,500 calories is then taken in for the other five days.
Mr Salmond said: “It can be a struggle but I’ve dropped about two stone and two collar sizes.”
The politician apparently decided to lose some weight after his staff became worried he was putting too much on while taking part in official engagements.
He has jokingly named Mr King as his “dietary advisor” after the pair met at Wimbledon earlier this year.
The first minister will be fronting a ‘no’ campaign next year when Scotland goes to a referendum over whether or not the country remains in the UK.
