Blindness risk could be reduced by a quarter with Mediterranean diet

Research suggests that following a Mediterranean diet, high in fruit, vegetables, fish and nuts, may help fight against age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and reduce the risk of blindness by a quarter.
Studying the diet habits of more than 2,500 people over 13 years, the researchers found those eating a diet high in oily fish and veg boosted their protection against AMD. This is thanks to these foods being rich in antioxidants, which prevent inflammation.
Publishing their findings in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, they found that those eating foods associated with a Mediterranean diet reduced their risk of getting AMD by up to 26 per cent, whilst it was reduced by one third for those who are more susceptible.
“We examined the association of adherence to the Mediterranean diet and genetic susceptibility with progression to advanced AMD. [Our results show] adherence to a Mediterranean-type diet is linked to a lower risk of mortality and chronic disease,” the authors wrote.
It is important both for eye and general health to follow a healthy diet, which includes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. It is also important to wear good quality sunglasses when in the sun to protect your eyes further.
