World Cancer Research Fund scientists consider that 45 minutes of moderate exercise on a daily basis could prevent 5,500 cases of breast cancer developing in the UK per annum.
A minimum of 4,600 cases of bowel cancer could also be prevented should individuals exercise for 30 minutes daily. This would reduce the cases of both kinds of cancer by 12 per cent.
The causes of several thousands of cancer cases are alcohol, diet and obesity .
A proportional drop in death rates from these diseases would reduce deaths from breast cancer by 1,500 and deaths from bowel cancer by 1,900 annually.
The cancer research charity is emphasising this link as it considers that only a third of people are aware that exercise directly reduces the risk of developing cancer, Britain’s second biggest killer.
As well as brisk walking, other activities can include simming or cycling at a leisurely pace, gardening, dancing and vacuuming in conjunction with other housework.
