70,000 early deaths could be halved by healthy diet

According to recent analysis by the Cabinet Office, approximately 70,000 premature deaths every year could be prevented if people ate more healthy diets . The study indicates that third of heart disease and a quarter of all cancer deaths are thought to be diet related. The Cabinet Office strategy unit released an interim paper suggesting the real risk lies with children .
According to the researchers, children face a worse prognosis due to their diet . Ill health related to food costs the NHS a significant proportion of its budget each year. As obesity soars in scale and impact, this proportion will only climb.
Health minister Ivan Lewis reportedly commented: “Obesity is one of the great challenges facing both the NHS and our society, government alone cannot provide all the solutions, it is essential we offer strong leadership commensurate with the importance of the issue. That is why we will be using the analysis we are publishing today to inform the development of a radical long-term strategy to tackle obesity. This strategy, to be published later this month, will once again underline the centrality of prevention and public health at the heart of a modern NHS.”
