Protein diet helps keep weight down

A diet high in protein can aid the struggle to keep weight off once it’s been lost, according to recent results from a European study. A research team examined the difference between eating high and low protein diets .
Diets high in protein include plenty of foods such as eggs, meat, fish, beans and lentils. The study examined some 200 adults who lost 8 per cent of their body weight . Once this was achieved, the study group were put onto five different diets with varying levels of protein and GI.
The results of the study were presented at a pre-congress relating to obesity in Geneva, Switzerland. The study, which was known as Diogenes, investigated diets for weight control.
Co-ordinator Professor Astrup reportedly commented: “I think the message is following diets with low glycemic index might be good for type 2 diabetics who are concerned and need some control of their blood sugar and it might have a slight effect on the bad LDL cholesterol . But in terms of weight loss and weight regulation, the glycemic index does not play any role, so there is no reason really to waste efforts and money on that for body weight regulation.”
