A recent study, at Reading University, Berkshire, looked at the effect of bread enriched with different vegetables on the feeling of fullness in 17 normal weight women aged between 18 and 35.
Participants were given white bread cream cheese sandwiches, with carrots or tomatoes. They were asked to record their feeling of fullness upon eating these sandwiches.
Women who ate tomato sandwiches felt the fullest.
Julie Lovegrove, who led the study, agrees that it was a small study, however, the results were statistically significant.
The research team considers that more research needs to be carried out. However, increased tomato intake can be a sensible step as tomatoes are known for their multiple health benefits and lowering the risk of various diseases.
