The research team studied the results of 12,068 food records of 19 to 64 year olds from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey.
The results highlighted that a fifth of adults consumed no solids at breakfast, one third opted for cereal and 45 per cent preferred a non-cereal breakfast. Tea and coffee were the most popular items, with 84 per cent drinking them for breakfast.
