Diatomaceous Earth is often referred to as DE, fossil shell Flour, diatomite and kieselgur. This fine powder is made up of fossilized microscopic skeletal remains of a kind of hard shelled plant like algae called diatoms (see image photos). This plant like algae has been a part of the earths ecology from the early beginnings of earths history.
Our Diatomaceous Earth is a natural product and is not calcined or flux calcined. Please note: breathing in of dust will have to be completely have shyed away from.
Not all food grade DE is the same. The shape of the diatoms is essential, they will have to be tubular with holes in the centre on the walls. Also the DE will have to be from a fresh water source as this forms a harder and sharper shell compared to a salt water source DE. There are around 600 deposits of Diatomaceous Earth in america and only four of these are thought to be food grade by the FDA. Other food grade DE can contain higher amounts of sediment and clay making the fossil shell flour a gray to brown colour. Other food grade deposit have been analyzed and we are satisfied that our Food grade Diatomaceous earth is the purist form of fresh water DE to be had.
