Oat bread for diabetes diet

Tue, 26 Aug 2008

Diabetes, one of the fastest growing and most serious health epidemics in the UK, could be aided by a diet incorporating a type of bread packed with oats .

Researchers from Aberdeen University created a type of bread rich in oats to help people control their diabetes . Nothing commercially available had a high enough oat content.

Local Scottish specialists baked the bread, and researchers found that a healthy diet rich in oats could help people with type 1 diabetes control their disease. One researcher was reported as commenting:

"The aim of the research is to develop new dietary strategies that could improve diabetes control . We hope this could delay the need for people with type two diabetes to start taking tablets or insulin to control their blood sugar . We also hope it could potentially reduce the risk of some of the complications of diabetes."
